Cotton, the most popular natural fabric in the world, has been the go-to choice for t-shirts for generations, and for good reason. If you live on earth, the chances are pretty high you’ve worn a few 100% cotton shirts in your lifetime.
Cotton’s softness is unparalleled, making it a favorite among those who prioritize comfort above all else. Cotton is also very breathable, making it comfortable in any weather conditions. It is a very durable fabric that can withstand the test of time if properly cared for. Cotton shirts are among the most affordable types of t-shirt and are perfect for digital (direct-to-garment) printing and screen printing alike.
Although most cotton garments are pre-shrunk, they can still be prone to shrinking if not cared for properly. It's recommended to never wash or dry cotton with excessive heat to avoid the possibility of shrinking. Cotton also has the reputation of wrinkling easily, and may fade more than other fabrics over time with frequent washing.
Cotton is classified by its “fabric weight” which generally ranges from 5.0 oz to 6.1 oz. The higher the weight, the thicker the fabric will be which will also add to its durability. There is a special variety of cotton called ringspun cotton, or soft-spun cotton that deserves its own category which is discussed below.
The outstanding value and function from 100% cotton makes it the first consideration for anyone needing a large volume of t-shirts without breaking the bank. Providing affordability and versatility, 100% cotton shirts are appropriate for events, promotions, merchandising, uniforms, and any budget-conscious occasion.

While also 100% cotton, ringspun cotton shirts are manufactured in a different way that sets them apart and far enough above traditional cotton that they deserve their own category. With ringspun cotton, the threads created from cotton fibers are “spun” and twisted tighter before being woven into the final fabric. This produces a thinner, yet stronger, smoother, and softer fabric that takes comfort to the next level.
Not only is ringspun cotton softer, more durable, and more comfortable than traditional cotton, it is also more stretchy and lighter in weight, making it feel like your favorite worn-in shirt right out of the box. Because the surface of the fabric is smoother and denser than regular cotton, printing on ringspun cotton results in a smoother and more vibrant print. Ringspun cotton also tends to be more resistant to fading and losing its shape from laundering compared to regular cotton.
Ringspun cotton shirts are superior, yet are not immune to some of the common pitfalls of traditional cotton which can include the tendency to wrinkle, and the possibility of shrinking if it is washed and/or dried with excessive heat. Rinspun fabric is more costly to produce so with the increased quality also comes an increased price tag.
Not all ringspun cotton shirts are created equal! In fact there are several levels of quality within the ringspun category. First you have standard ringspun shirts which may also be called soft-spun, or soft-style. A step above ringspun there is “combed ringspun cotton” which has undergone an additional step of processing that “combs” the impurities out of the cotton fibers before it is “spun.” The highest level of quality is called “airlume combed ringspun cotton” which is more extensively combed and uses only the longest cotton fibers which prevents fewer tiny strands of fiber from “poking out” of the finished fabric. For more info on the superiority airlume ringspun cotton check out this article from Bella + Canvas.
Ringspun cotton t-shirts are the best choice for customers who don’t mind the trade-off of paying a bit extra for the highest quality garments with the best possible printing results. Many higher-end ringspun cotton shirts are produced with a “fashion fit” , a slightly thinner and more flattering shape that is best for retail sales, fashion lines, and any occasion where the comfort and fashionable appearance of the end user is of the utmost concern.

Polyester is the world’s most popular synthetic fiber. It’s well known for its moisture-wicking properties, meaning it pulls sweat away from your skin and evaporates it quickly, keeping you dry and comfortable during even the most intense workouts. It's like having a personal air conditioner built into your t-shirt - lightweight, breathable, and oh-so-cool. But polyester isn't just for gym rats and marathon runners. It's also great for outdoor activities like hiking, camping, and cycling, where moisture management and durability are key.
100% polyester is lightweight and breathable, resists shrinking and wrinkles, and retains its shape and color so your tee will look and feel great wash after wash, mile after mile. 100% polyester shirts keep you cool in the heat and many have the added benefit of being UV resistant which provides an extra layer of protection against the sun’s harmful rays.
Polyester lacks the softness of cotton, may feel clingy in hot weather, and can develop static cling. Also, because of their superior resistant properties, 100% polyester shirts cannot be digitally printed using the DTG (Direct-to-Garment) printing process, so they are only available for screen printing and embroidery.
Ideal for any outdoor activities that require moisture management and durability, including but not limited to sports jerseys, construction, landscaping, forestry, fishing, watersports, golfing, biking, running, and boating.

Now, let's talk about the perfect marriage of comfort and durability: 50/50 poly cotton blends. It's like having your cake and eating it too – why choose between comfort and performance when you can have both?
Resistant to shrinking and wrinkles, retains color vibrancy for longer periods, and dries faster than 100% cotton. Less expensive than 100% polyester and great for digital (DTG) and screen printing
Not as soft as 100% cotton, may trap heat in humid conditions, and can pill over time with frequent washing.
Great for uniforms, promotional t-shirts, and activewear where durability and ease of care are essential.

Plus, they're more eco-friendly than traditional cotton tees, thanks to the use of recycled materials. It's like hitting the jackpot in the fabric lottery – why settle for one great thing when you can have three?
Luxuriously soft with a vintage feel, retains shape and color exceptionally well, and drapes beautifully on the body.
May be more expensive than other fabric blends, requires special care when washing to maintain softness, and may not be as breathable as 100% cotton.
Perfect for fashion-forward t-shirts, upscale casual wear, and garments where style and comfort are equally important.
